Feb. 5, 2018. The Appalachian State University Department of Theatre and Dance will present four major productions during the spring 2018 season. Productions will take place at the university’s Valborg Theatre, I.G. Greer Studio Theatre and the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts. Myke Holmes of Boone is acting alongside John Malkovich, Mark Wahlberg, and Ronda Rousey in the upcoming film “Mile 22.” In this action film, an American Intelligence officer alongside his tactical command unit attempt to capture a police officer with confidential information to airport that is 22 miles away. The film’s release date will be announced shortly. In a recent interview with WETC Holmes stated,“What an extraordinary way to start off 2018! Jan 26, 2018. The 2017 Momentum Dance Showcase will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 and 28 in Appalachian State University’s Varsity Gymnasium dance studio, room 208. The annual showcase, presented by Appalachian’s student dance organization Momentum, will feature 10 original works choreographed and performed by students. Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute’s Associate of Fine Arts – Music Program has announced the schedule for the Spring Semester Performing Artist Series on the Caldwell Campus. It will feature six free performances, including local artists and a variety of musical genres. The Spring 2018 series will kick off with The Mercury Dames, a Boone-area trio who combine eclectic whimsy with jazz, blues and country standards to create a sassy, Vaudeville-inspired, vocally-driven offering. Jan. 5 2018. Are you apart of a non-profit organization? Is your non-profit organization looking for an opportunity to raise awareness and funding? If you answered yes to both questions, The Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce would like to invite your non-profit to participate in their WinterFest Charity Chili Cookoff. The event takes place on Saturday, Jan. 27 in the Blowing Rock School Gym. Non-profits are invited to either curate five gallons of chili or partner with a restaurant in order to provide five gallons of chili. Event participants will donate to their favorite chili. The non-profit group with the highest amount of donations wins, however all will receive monetary donations and raise awareness. Setup begins at 10:30 a.m. The event will be open to the public from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event ticket price is $8 for adults (12 and up), $5 for kids (over age 5). BRAHM is a staple in Blowing Rock, and is known for providing entertainment for all ages to enjoy. January is a very exciting month at the museum- between the continuation of the film series, two Cork & Canvas sessions, Arctic Art, Hands-On Ice Carving, The Afternoon Art Club, the Doodlebug Club and the excellent exhibits, there is something for everyone at BRAHM. On Saturday, Jan. 6, Beech Mountain Resort will host their annual Winterfest Beer Festival, which will feature several North Carolina Craft Breweries and Cideries and will have two live bands. There will be over 50 ales and ciders to taste. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased in advance for $25. At the door, tickets may be purchased for $30. Because of the area’s rich history with the arts, Blowing Rock Art and History Museum (BRAHM) is a pillar in the Blowing Rock community. Dec. 20, 2017. 2015’s “The Force Awakens” breathed new life into the “Star Wars” saga. For years the franchise had slowly been undone by ill-received prequels, retouchings, and add-ons that made the once-great property look like a money-grubbing joke. “The Force Awakens” restored heart to the series, balance to the Force, if you will.
