Aug. 1, 2014. Once again, the Blowing Rock Community Foundation will present the annual Groovy Nights fundraiser starting Sunday, Aug. 10. The sixth annual Groovy Nights event will take place on Sunday, Aug. 10, Tuesday, Aug. 12 and Friday, Aug. 15.

The shows will take place at the Blowing Rock Country Club and funds raised will benefit the Blowing Rock Community Foundation. Tickets for the event are $35, and the ticket purchase is tax deductible.

“We have 58 performers performing this year,” said Wendy Estes, who coordinates the event.

“This year we are excited about having ‘Barry Manilow.” Of course we will have ‘The Jackson Five!” Another special thing we are doing this year is we are doing the song ‘Happy’ by Pharrel Williams, but what we have done is we have made our own Blowing Rock ‘Happy’ video! It will debut the opening night of Groovy Nights and will be played while we are performing. We will put it up on YouTube Aug. 16.”

The Groovy Nights event is known for being one of the only places where you can laugh at your friends and not get in trouble for it. Members of the community put months of work into creating their characters to do performances that will have the audiences roaring with laughter, clapping their hands and singing along.

“I think it is so fun to see people that you know that are willing to get on stage and have a good time and make a fool of themselves for a good cause,” Estes said. “It is so neat to see people who you wouldn’t think would do it in a million years, but they do it to raise money for a good cause. We have 13 different performances this year, and you will be laughing and clapping the whole time. It is entertaining, it is fun and it is a great way to help a good cause.”

Reservations are filling up, but there is still time to get your tickets.

“We always suggest that people call the country club to make reservations,” Estes said. “Groovy Nights has become so popular that last year we sold out all three shows!”

To purchase tickets, call the Blowing Rock Country Club at 828-295-3171 to reserve your spot.

The mission of the Blowing Rock Community Foundation is to raise and award charitable contributions to nonprofit organizations and scholarships that benefit the Blowing Rock Community.

“Every year, the Blowing Rock Community Foundation gives out several scholarships to Blowing Rock residents who are going to college,” Estes said. “The foundation also gives grants to those that apply. We have given to the fire department, the police department, Ensemble Stage and more.”
