Keynote Speakers Announced for ‘Bringing The Dream Home To Boone’ Rally Wednesday, Aug. 28

Aug. 27, 2013. The speakers for the “Forward Together/Moral Monday” rally, “Bringing the Dream Home To Boone,” this Wednesday, August 28, at Harvest House (247 Boone Heights Dr.) have been announced. (Read more about the rally here.)

Headlining the event will be Dr. Timothy Tyson, historian and author of the award-winning 2004 book, “Blood Done Sign My Name.” Tyson’s book, about the 1970 murder of Henry Marrow, won the Grawemeyer Award in Religion, was selected at UNC-Chapel Hill for the summer reading program in 2005, and was made into a movie in 2010. Dr. Tyson is Senior Research Scholar at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, Professor of American Christianity & Southern Culture at Duke Divinity School, and Education Chair of the NC NAACP. 

Joining Tyson at the podium on Wednesday will be keynoter Brother Wesley Jarel Morris, currently employed at the Beloved Community Center, a social justice organization in Greensboro. He received an undergraduate degree in Professional History from North Carolina A&T State University.  Brother Wesley was born in Raleigh, NC.  His current focus of work at the BCC includes immigrant and worker justice and youth organizing.  Brother Wesley is a dedicated mentor, facilitator, and reconciler.  He actively works, building better relationships among the races, especially African American and Latino Unity. He is also works closely with the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) as a Human Rights Advocate for farm workers in North Carolina.   

Among the speakers from Watauga County will be Dr. Matthew Robinson, criminal justice professor at Appalachian State University; Jennifer Lacey, a teacher at Parkway School and president of the local branch of the North Carolina Education Association; Todd Carter of the Hospitality House of Boone; Dr. Marye Hacker, community physician; Rio Tazewell, community organizer; and Veronica Toub, an ESL teacher at Caldwell Community College.

Providing entertainment for the rally will be Melissa Reaves, the Junaluska Gospel Choir, Todd Wright and friends, and Kat Chaffin.

“Bringing the Dream Home Boone” is one of 13 similar rallies being held across North Carolina on Wednesday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the “March on Washington” and the “I Have a Dream” speech by the Rev. Martin Luther King.
