Who would have thought that jumping into a hole in an icy lake while wearing wild, wacky costumes would become one of the most time-honored annual traditions in the High Country? What sounds like crazy is apparently a lot of fun for tons of residents and visitors to the High Country every single year. Blowing Rock’s WinterFest celebration provides the backdrop to the annual Polar Plunge, where this year costumed citizens will leap from the dock into a freezing cold Chetola Lake on Jan. 25-for a good cause of course. by Madison V. Aug. 30, 2012. The Watauga Humane Society Dog Jog will be held Saturday, Sept. 8, starting at 11 a.m. at the Watauga Parks & Recreation Complex. In addition to the Dog Jog, this event includes family-oriented, pet friendly activities, exciting prizes and pet-related vendors.

April Puppy Showers Bring May Dollars for the Watauga Humane Society

May 14, 2012. Deb Flaherty, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) at Watauga Medical Center, is radiating pure joy as she is double-kissed by her newly adopted puppies Daisy Mae (tan) and Lily Belle (black). Deb, who lost her 13-year-old border-collie mix to cancer over a year ago, is so appreciative of the opportunity to give these shelter puppies a loving home. A volunteer that serves on the Watauga Humane Society’s Board of Directors, she is well aware of the recent financial drought that the new adoption center has endured.

Six Week Puppy Kindergarten and Basic Obedience Class Offered at Watauga Humane Society, Beginning June 26

May 14, 2012. Melissa MacKinnon, owner of Woof Pack Pet Services, is offering a Puppy Kindergarten Class and a Basic Obedience Class in the Watauga Humane Society’s Community Room at 312 Paws Way, Boone, NC 28607. At 6 p.m., beginning Tuesday, June 26 and continuing for six weeks, the Puppy Kindergarten Class (puppies from 4 months – 1 year in age), will focus on socialization, problem puppy behaviors, leash walking and six basic commands.

The Watauga Humane Society’s 31st Annual Rummage Sale will be held June 29-30, 2012 at the National Guard Armory, 482 State Farm Road in Boone. If you’d like to give donations of antiques, working appliances, books, computers, crafts, furniture, jewelry, etc., please take your donations to Blue Skies Storage, 482 State Farm Road in Boone, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Mondays.
