Who would have thought that jumping into a hole in an icy lake while wearing wild, wacky costumes would become one of the most time-honored annual traditions in the High Country? What sounds like crazy is apparently a lot of fun for tons of residents and visitors to the High Country every single year. Blowing Rock's WinterFest celebration provides the backdrop to the annual Polar Plunge, where this year costumed citizens will leap from the dock into a freezing cold Chetola Lake on Jan. 25-for a good cause of course. Watauga Humane Society Could Get $250,000 Through ‘Chase Community Giving;’ Voting Open Until Sept. 19

Sept. 7, 2012. The Watauga Humane Society recently received notice that they were nominated as part of Chase bank's "Chase Community Giving" program. The program gives out approximately $2.5 million in grants to 196 eligible charities and organizations who receive the most votes from the public. Deb Flaherty, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) at Watauga Medical Center, is radiating pure joy as she is double-kissed by her newly adopted puppies Daisy Mae (tan) and Lily Belle (black). Deb, who lost her 13-year-old border-collie mix to cancer over a year ago, is so appreciative of the opportunity to give these shelter puppies a loving home.
