Kitten and puppy season is here, and shelters across North Carolina are finding their kennels full. To help to remedy this problem, the Watauga Humane Society in Boone has announced their $15 Spay/Neuter special, where you can get your furry friend fixed for just $15.

Who would have thought that jumping into a hole in an icy lake while wearing wild, wacky costumes would become one of the most time-honored annual traditions in the High Country? What sounds like crazy is apparently a lot of fun for tons of residents and visitors to the High Country every single year. Blowing Rock’s WinterFest celebration provides the backdrop to the annual Polar Plunge, where this year costumed citizens will leap from the dock into a freezing cold Chetola Lake on Jan. 25-for a good cause of course. by Madison V. Dec. 6, 2012. Watauga Humane Society’s annual Christmas Open House will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Irma Baker Lyons Adoption and Education Center. The staff continues the tradition of asking you to celebrate the season of sharing with them by bringing gifts for the animals.
Sept. 10, 2012. The 15th annual Watauga Humane Society Fur Ball fundraiser takes place on Saturday, Sept. 15, at a new venue and promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

Sept. 7, 2012. The Watauga Humane Society recently received notice that they were nominated as part of Chase bank’s “Chase Community Giving” program. The program gives out approximately $2.5 million in grants to 196 eligible charities and organizations who receive the most votes from the public. Voting opened yesterday and will remain open until Sept. 19.

Sept. 4, 2012. The shelter is getting crowded, so Avery County Humane Society has started another Name Your Price promotion for any adult cat or dog until Oct. 15. You don’t have to live in Avery County to qualify for this unique opportunity to pick a pet and save over 75 percent off the regular $85 price.
Aug. 30, 2012. The Watauga Humane Society Dog Jog will be held Saturday, Sept. 8, starting at 11 a.m. at the Watauga Parks & Recreation Complex. In addition to the Dog Jog, this event includes family-oriented, pet friendly activities, exciting prizes and pet-related vendors.
Aug. 21, 2012. On Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 from 7 to 11 a.m., volunteers for the Watauga Humane Society will hold a giant plant sale in the parking lot of Precision Printing at 1302 Blowing Rock Road in Boone. All proceeds will support the shelter’s community spay-neuter initiatives.
Aug. 20, 2012. Watauga Humane Society’s Bare Bones Boutique is holding a Summer Clothing Brown Bag Sale Friday, Aug. 24 and Saturday, Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Come fill a bag with summer clothing for only $5.33 and shop other specials.
Aug. 13, 2012. Watauga Humane Society presents the 15th Annual Fur Ball Saturday Evening, Sept. 15, 2012 at the Blowing Rock Country Club. Reception, Silent Auction and Wine Raffle begin at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is followed by a Live Auction and Wine Raffle drawing from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m.
June 27, 2012. The Watauga Humane Society is seeking clothes, books, toys, furniture, antiques, appliances, and other donations for its 31st Annual Rummage Sale June 29-30 at the National Guard Armory in Boone.

May 21, 2012. Microchipping is the process of embedding a tiny identification microchip under a pet’s skin, which can be scanned and read at shelter facilities to identify the pet’s owner. Saturday microchip clinics are routinely held at the Animal Medical Center of Boone, 1582 Old 421 South, from 11:30 am until Noon.
May 14, 2012. Deb Flaherty, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) at Watauga Medical Center, is radiating pure joy as she is double-kissed by her newly adopted puppies Daisy Mae (tan) and Lily Belle (black). Deb, who lost her 13-year-old border-collie mix to cancer over a year ago, is so appreciative of the opportunity to give these shelter puppies a loving home. A volunteer that serves on the Watauga Humane Society’s Board of Directors, she is well aware of the recent financial drought that the new adoption center has endured.
May 14, 2012. Melissa MacKinnon, owner of Woof Pack Pet Services, is offering a Puppy Kindergarten Class and a Basic Obedience Class in the Watauga Humane Society’s Community Room at 312 Paws Way, Boone, NC 28607. At 6 p.m., beginning Tuesday, June 26 and continuing for six weeks, the Puppy Kindergarten Class (puppies from 4 months – 1 year in age), will focus on socialization, problem puppy behaviors, leash walking and six basic commands.
May 14, 2012. The Watauga Humane Society’s 31st Annual Rummage Sale will be held June 29-30, 2012 at the National Guard Armory, 482 State Farm Road in Boone.
