Organized by the Republican members of the Watauga County Board of Elections, a drop-in session was held in downtown Boone on Monday night to discuss potential early voting sites in Watauga County for the primary election in May.

In the first meeting since the bi-partisan mediation sessions with two members on the State Board of Elections held in recent weeks, the Watauga County Board of Elections trio played nice with each other on Monday evening and listened to the public for 15 minutes at the end of the meeting. Chair Luke Eggers and Secretary Bill Aceto, the Republican members on the board, offered little resistance on some matters that, in the past, they had been steadfast against in their roughly six-month tenure on the board.

Update: The State Board of Elections will consider a complaint calling for the removal of two Republican board members from the Watauga County Board of Elections that was filed by local Democrats Stella Anderson, Jesse Presnell and Ian O’Keefe.

Aug. 12, 2013. While admonishing the other two members on the Watauga County Board of Elections, Kathleen Campbell, a Democrat on the three-member board, threatened legal action multiple times during the heated Watauga County Board of Elections meeting on Monday that included a roomful of boos and jeers and ended with a chant of “shame on you.”
The meeting, which initially began in the board room of the Watauga County Board of Elections office in the courthouse, recessed after 20 minutes and re-convened in the commissioners’ boardroom next door to accommodate dozens of community members, many wearing green in protest of agenda items the Republican majority, Bill Aceto and Luke Eggers, would pass before the meeting’s adjournment.

In Watauga, only 1.53 percent of registered voters (600 out of 39,330) cast ballots, compared to 3.58 percent (220,635 out of 6,158,561) statewide.
