The Annual Shag at Sugar Mountain Held Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Sugar Mountain Golf Clubhouse

After being postponed due to rain earlier this month, the annual Shag at Sugar Mountain will finally take place on Saturday, Aug. 23. The event will be held from 4:30-9 p.m. at Sugar Mountain Golf Clubhouse located at 1054 Sugar Mtn Dr. in Sugar Mountain. “The first one was in 2010 to celebrate our 25th anniversary as a township,” said Tammy Floyd, Clerk at the Village of Sugar Mountain. “But people loved it so much and asked for it again and again so we obliged and made it an annual event.”

Tales of Mystery and Imagination Dinner Kicks Off Third Annual High Country Fetsival of the Book

The third annual High Country Festival of the Book kicks off with a dinner and program June 27 featuring bestselling author Lynn Cullen, whose historical novel “Mrs. Poe” was inspired by literature’s most haunting love triangle. Lynn Cullen is the author of “The Creation of Eve,” named among the best fiction books of 2010 by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and as an April 2010 Indie Next Selection. She is also the author of numerous award-winning books for children.

Sprucing Up the Banner Elk Band Shelter

The Town of Banner Elk, the Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce and Lowe’s Home Improvement have teamed up to paint and repair the band shelter in Tate-Evans Park. Lowe’s Home Improvement generously donated paint, caulking, siding and labor to help improve the band shelter. The shelter gets a lot of use each summer as hundreds of people come to see concerts in the park. It is also used throughout the year for town celebrations, Tai Chi classes and even Santa! Patricelli Craft Enrichment Program offered each year at Appalachian State University is a welcome outlet for creativity and a great way to learn a new craft or hobby. This year, classes will be offered in glass fusing and slumping, digital photography, weaving, welding and metalworking, stained glass, lampwork and beadmaking, jewelry, wood bowl-turning, fiber spinning, sewing, painting, basket making and pottery.

Siren Mountain Jam, A Celebration of Women’s Music and Art, Hits High Country Fairgrounds June 21-22

June 21, 2013. For two days, the High Country Fairgrounds will be taken over by the first annual Siren Mountain Jam, a two-day frestival showcasing women’s music and art in the High Country of North Carolina. On June 21 – 22, the festival will showcase a dozen musical acts, over 30 artist vendors, a healing arts village, workshops, food vendors with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options and on-site camping.

Dec. 9, 2012 Mrs. Joan Ruth Parlier, age 78, of Joe Parlier Road, Elk Park, passed away Sunday morning, December 9, 2012 at her home. Born in Detroit, Michigan, she was a daughter of the late Otto and Margaret Griffith Waldecker. Joan was a member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church and a homemaker. She is survived by her children; Arnold Parlier and wife Brenda of Granite Falls, Charles Parlier and wife Willa Deane of Mountain City, Sandra Parlier of Elk Park, James Parlier of West Jefferson, Linda Biggs and husband Gary of Elk Park, and Jeff Parlier and wife Sondra of Morganton, fifteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren, one brother; Richard Waldecker of Michigan, and two sisters; Gerry Riley and Delores Tyson both of Michigan. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Sanford Arnold Parlier, one son, Joe Parlier, four brothers; Ernie, Russell, Lawrence, and Edward Waldecker, and three sisters; her twin, Jean Miller Lamothe, Kathryn Oliver and Florence Murray, and two granddaughters; Shannon and Donna Kay Mynes. LUNAFEST; 12th Annual National Touring Film Festival Comes to Boone

Oct. 29, 2012. LUNAFEST, the fund raising film festival dedicated to promoting awareness about women’s issues, highlighting women filmmaker and bringing women together in their communities, will be hosted by Earth Fare, Appalachian Women’s Fund and Girls on the Run of the High Country.
Films will be shown at the Greenbriar Theater in the ASU Plemmons Student Union on Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m.
