More than 100 Special Olympics athletes from North Carolina and Virginia competed in the 2014 Special Olympics North Carolina Winter Games – Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding Jan. 5-6 hosted by the French Swiss Ski College at Appalachian Ski Mountain between Blowing Rock and Boone, according to Special Olympics North Carolina President and CEO Keith L. Fishburne.

For many High Country residents, the Michael R. Patricelli Craft Enrichment Program offered each year at Appalachian State University is a welcome outlet for creativity and a great way to learn a new craft or hobby. This year, classes will be offered in glass fusing and slumping, digital photography, weaving, welding and metalworking, stained glass, lampwork and beadmaking, jewelry, wood bowl-turning, fiber spinning, sewing, painting, basket making and pottery.

AppalCART, the local public transportation authority service Watauga County, reported record ridership of 1,712,873 passenger trips in 834,714 miles of service during calendar year 2013. Miles of service increased eight percent over those delivered in 2012.
