Watauga County Obituaries – Compiled Oct. 30, 2012 Mrs. Ellen H. Hartley, D. October 29, 2012 Mrs. Ellen H. Hartley, age 79, of Blowing Rock, passed peacefully into her Savior’s arms on Monday night, surrounded by her beloved family. Born July 19, 1933, in the Blackberry region of Caldwell County, she was the daughter of Edmund and Zora Ford Hamlet, and was the youngest of nine siblings. She is survived by her son Mike and wife Micki of Blowing Rock and two granddaughters, Cassandra and Kathryn; her sisters Eula Young of Bishopville, SC and Kathy Steele of Gainesville, FL; brother-in-law Jim West of Newnan GA; sister-in-law Virginia Hartley of Boone; special friends Johnny Tester of Phoenix AZ, Duane & Janelle Addison of Boone, Aubrey & Elizabeth Riley of Boone; many nieces and nephews, and her loving church family. She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin Hartley; her parents; brothers Gordie Hamlet and John Hamlet; and sisters Blanche Chandler, Mary Hamlet, Faye McCormick, and Lea Coffey. Oct. 16, 2012 Arvil Clayton Greene, 78, of American Legion Road, Greer, SC, passed away Tuesday morning, October 16, ,2012 at the home of his son, Rev. Roger Greene in Greer, after a lengthy illness. Arvil was born in Watauga County to Clayton Carroll Greene and Rosa Bryan Greene. He graduated from Appalachian State Teacher’s College in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education and Social Studies. During his career, he was a social worker, a HUD worker, and retired as an insurance salesman. Arvil enjoyed gardening, playing checkers, walking on the beach, flea marketing, and especially, talking and joking with people. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Greene is survived by his wife, Barbara Townsend Greene; three sons, Arvil Dean Greene, James Edward Greene, (Carolyn) and Rev. Aug. 15, 2012 Mr. Kenneth Max Barlow, age 71, of Reas Street, Boone, passed away Wednesday morning, August 15, 2012 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation. Born June 17, 1941 in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Fredrick and Alma Greene Barlow. Max was retired from ASU, and worked at Ride with Pride Carwash for a number of years. He was a member and Sunday School Teacher at Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by one sister; Henrietta Johnson and husband Gary of Prospect, Ohio, two brothers; Doug Barlow and wife Pat of Boone, and Gaither Barlow and wife Carolyn of Madison, NC, a long time friend; Barbara Campbell of Vilas, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Joe Barlow. Funeral services for Mr. Kenneth Max Barlow will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 until 2 o’clock. Mrs. Langdon was born January 15, 1930 in Portsmouth, Ohio, a daughter of the late Jesse Council Robbins and Lois Brewer Robbins. She was a retired hostess for Hound Ears Club and Holiday Inn of Boone. Archie Edward Pennell, D. July 6, 2012 Mr. Archie Edward Pennell, age 86, of Ed Williams Road, Zionville, died Friday, July 6, 2012. Born October 26, 1925, he was saved at a young age and he is now home with the Lord. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and brother. He was preceded in death by his father and mother Edward and Emma Pennell, two brothers Earnest and Dean Pennell and two grandsons, Jamie Pennell and Mark Pennell. He is survived by Irene Pennell; his wife of more than 60 years; two sons, A. J. Pennell and Jerry Pennell and wife Jane of Zionville, grandson Jerry Lee Pennell, Jr. and wife Mandy and two great-grandsons Mark & Matthew Pennell all of Zionville and by two sisters Della Lawrence of Lenoir and Margie Isaacs of Zionville. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was known for his kindness, gentle spirit and his generosity. June 12, 2012 Douglas Arthur Edwards, 67, of Vanderpool Road, Vilas, died Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at his home, where his beloved wife, Sandra Basel, and many friends and relatives had helped him through his brief battle with cancer. Doug owned DAE-COR Builders and most recently was associated with Cornerstone Construction in Foscoe. He loved music, and animals, but had a special place in his heart for Rufus, his Black Jack donkey. Doug was an ardent baseball fan and follow most games of his favorite team, the Oakland A’s. After his diagnosis with a brain tumor in March, Doug became an inspiration to those who know him be keeping his keen sense of humor and generous spirit. Doug was born April 26, 1945, in Merced, California. Her served in the Navy and then graduated from San Francisco State University with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology. He moved to Watauga County in 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Carble of Monte Vista, California, and one sister, Doris.
