Who will pick the winning winter weather worm this year? The 36th annual Woolly Worm Festival, scheduled for Oct. 18-19 in Banner Elk, is coming up quick! Since 1978, the residents of beautiful, scenic Banner Elk have celebrated the coming of winter with the highly-anticipated event that always takes place on the third weekend of October.

This afternoon, the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual awards ceremony in the Evergreen Room at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. The 2014 nominees were announced earlier this month, and included more than 40 individuals, businesses and organizations nominated for many different awards. Last night, the Avery County Chamber Staff along with the Board of Directors and State and Local Representatives held the Avery County Chamber’s 5th annual Open House at 5 p.m. More than 100 people attended this year’s event, making it the largest open house yet. by Madison V.
