First ‘Family Fun Festival’ Benefit for Local After-School Programs at Watauga High School on Saturday April 12

The halls, gym and auditorium of Watauga High School will be filled on Saturday, April 12, not with students making up snow days, but instead with carnival games, popcorn, live music and an auction to support local after-school programs. The inaugural “Family Fun Festival” benefit for Watauga County Extended Learning Centers will be held Saturday, April 12 from 1-8 p.m., featuring entertainment and activities for all ages.

Local salons, Haircut 101 and Shear Shakti, are teaming up with Boone Saloon for a Cut-a-Thon benefit on Wednesday, May 16, starting at 6 p.m., to support community members and friends, Serena Crawford and Jason Brown. Brown suffered a serious brain injury in late March which resulted in an extended time in ICU, hospitalization and now will continue recovery for as much as a year.

Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University will present a visiting scholar lecture by Stuart Horodner, who will be speaking about his newly released book, “The Art Life: On Creativity and Career.” The talk will take place on Monday, April 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Belk Library and Information Commons, room 114 at ASU. The event is free and open to the public, and copies of Horodner’s book will be available for purchase at the lecture for $25.
