Before “bluegrass” became a style of music, it was simply the name of a band: “Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys.” In 1938 the band made their first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry, and the music was so well received-- and became so popular--over time, the name “bluegrass” evolved into a genre, a style of music.
