Before “bluegrass” became a style of music, it was simply the name of a band: “Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys.” In 1938 the band made their first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry, and the music was so well received– and became so popular–over time, the name “bluegrass” evolved into a genre, a style of music.
