NASA Dream Becomes Reality for Two ASU Students

May 17, 2012. Appalachian State University received $90,000 from N.C. Space Grant Consortium for the 2012-13 academic year, $40,000 of which will support graduate and undergraduate research scholarships. Undergraduates James Phillips and Joshua Kelley will use their N.C. Space Grant funding to conduct research at the NASA Kennedy Space Center Electrostatics and Surface Physics Laboratory.

Catherine J. Smith Gallery at Appalachian State Presents Visiting Scholar Lecture by Stuart Horodner

April 2, 2012. Catherine J. Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University will present a visiting scholar lecture by Stuart Horodner, who will be speaking about his newly released book, “The Art Life: On Creativity and Career.” The talk will take place on Monday, April 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Belk Library and Information Commons, room 114 at ASU. The event is free and open to the public, and copies of Horodner’s book will be available for purchase at the lecture for $25.

ASU’s LIPS Club Hosts ‘SlutWalk’ to Raise Awareness About Female Sexuality, Sexual Assault and Rape


On Wednesday, March 28, at 2:30 p.m., the Appalachian State chapter of LIPS: Expressions of Female Sexuality Club hosted a “SlutWalk” through the streets of Boone. Approximately 50 people gathered and the walk began at Sanford Mall on the campus of ASU. Walkers made their way down King Street to South Depot Street, then down Rivers Street and back to Sanford Mall. “We are putting on this event to show that dress is not an invitation for violence or to be raped,” said Elizabeth Penick, co-founder of the ASU LIPS club. “It is also showing that people have the autonomy to decide who they want to have sex with, as long as it’s consenting, and they do not need to be judged or shamed for it.”

March 20, 2012. Representatives from 26 NFL teams converged on Appalachian State University on Monday for ASU’s annual Pro Day. Eight former Mountaineers worked out for the assembled professional football personnel at the Appalachian Athletics Center and Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Poet and memoirist Toi Derricotte will give a reading on Thursday, March 22, at Appalachian State University in the Table Rock Room of Plemmons Student Union at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series. She will also present a craft talk titled “Poetry or Prose: Rethinking the Poetic Line” in Table Rock Room from 2 to 3:15 p.m.
