The Watauga County Relay for Life Hosts the 2014 Kickoff Event Feb. 6 at Deerfield Methodist Church

Relay for Life of Watauga County will hold the 2014 Kick-Off event on Thursday, Feb. 6. The event will be held at Deerfield United Methodist Church on Deerfield Road in Boone. Registration and welcome will begin at 5:45 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Top Relayers and teams from 2013 will be recognized, along with Team Captains and teams who have participated in early registration challenges for this years’ event. Local Business ‘Pennies Making Change’ Honors Ted Mackorell with Proceeds Benefiting Cancer Research

In November of 2013, siblings and Boone natives Andrew, 25, and Ashley Mackorell, 22, started Pennies Making Change, a business turning everyday pennies into jewelry with a meaning and uniting purpose. The business was started in honor of their late father and beloved member of the community, Ted Mackorell, who once owned Makoto’s Japanese Steakhouse and passed away in 2005 from brain cancer. Make a Difference! Ski or Ride to Benefit the American Cancer Society at Sugar Mountain Ski Resort

March 2, 2012. SUGAR MOUNTAIN — On Sunday, March 4, Sugar Mountain celebrates the life of the late Dick Trundy, a decorated Marine Corps General and aviator who served as Sugar Mountain Ski Resorts Director of Operations after his retirement from the service. Trundy was an avid skier who enthusiastically embraced the daily life of a ski area executive. Unfortunately he died of cancer in 2002.
