Appalachian State University wrestling will send four wrestlers to the 2016 Division I Wrestling Championship hosted at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The championship will take place March 17-19.
The Mountaineers (12-4, 6-1 SoCon) won the SoCon Championship with the help of three individual Champions in Michael Longo at 141 pounds, Nick Kee at 174 pounds, and Denzel Dejournette at heavyweight. All three champions recieved automatic bids into the tournament field.
The NCAA announced the at-large bids on Tuesday afternoon. Forrest Przybysz heard his name called as a 165 pound at-large selection. Przybysz was the 2016 runner-up at the SoCon Championship. The redshirt sophomore also was a runner-up in 2015.
Dejournette received the higest seed for the Mountaineers at No. 6 and will face Brooks Black of Illinois in the first round. Kee is a No. 14 seed Jonathan Schleifer of Princeton. Przybysz is unranked and will take on No. 7 seed Anthony Perrotti of Rutgers. Longo is also unranked and will be in the wrestle-in match and will face Zach Finesilver of Duke.
Przybysz and Kee are making their first career appearances at the national tournament. Dejournette and Longo both went to St. Louis for last season’s edition of the tournament and both recorded a win.
