Oct. 26, 2012. ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women’s basketball was selected to repeat as Southern Conference Champions in the league’s preseason media poll, the league office announced Thursday.

The Mountaineers, who won their second-straight SoCon title a year ago and won a school record 27 games, were picked to finish second in the preseason coaches poll.

In addition to the team’s preseason honors, seniors Anna Freeman and Courtney Freeman, along with sophomore Maryah Sydnor, were selected as preseason all-SoCon honorees by the league’s coaches.

The Apps picked up 12 first-place votes and 226 points in the media poll to finish 10 points ahead of second-place Davidson. Chattanooga earned the third-place nod in the media poll while two-time defending SoCon Tournament champion Samford was tabbed fourth.

In the coaches poll, Davidson received top billing with five first-place votes and 94 points, just three ahead of App State, who picked up four first-place nods and 91 points. Chattanooga earned the other two first-place votes to finish third while Samford was picked fourth.

The Southern Conference begins its women’s basketball season on Nov. 9. Appalachian State opens its season against Lees-McRae at 5 p.m. that day.
