Jan. 3, 2013. The excitement of Winterfest returns to Beech Mountain Resort this weekend, Jan. 5 and 6, and promises a full slate of events that will please snow lovers and music lovers alike. The two day event includes the ever-popular Cardboard Box Derby, the Winterfest Rail Jam, live music and much more.

“It is important to us to provide a quality customer experience, which is why we host Winterfest,” said Talia Freeman, Beech Mountain Resort marketing director. “Events like this ensure an abundance of activities for all ages.”

Saturday will include face painting in the View Haus, figure skating demonstrations at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., ice sculpting demonstrations and a karaoke competition at 4:30 p.m. An acoustic bluegrass band will be playing at the Beech Tree Bar and Grille during the day and at 7 p.m., BPL will offer up some live music in the Beech Tree. Also on Saturday, moms get a break with a new event for kids. Snow Day Camp is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering winter activities for children. Snow Day Camp is $25 and includes ice-skating, face painting, craft making and lunch.

“This year, we really tried to focus on activities for families and children,” Freeman said.

Sunday kicks off with a bang, with the popular Winterfest Rail Jam at 11 a.m. At noon, visual judging for the cardboard box derby will take place and the derby will kick off at 2 p.m.

“The Cardboard Box Derby is a tradition here and a favorite event for many,” Freeman said. “It’s always incredible to see what people come up with.”

Sunday’s events will conclude with the Roots Ride Shop Skateboard Competition at 3 p.m.

Huge sales on apparel and equipment will be held throughout the weekend. The latest ski and snowboard equipment demos will also be featured. Other attractions — including inflatables, professional figure skating demonstrations and figure skating lessons — will also be held at Beech Mountain Resort.

The Bathing Beauty, typically an event held during Winterfest, has been rescheduled to be held in conjunction with College Week on Feb. 2.  Males and females alike are encouraged to wear their one-piece or bikinis, but if they shed any further layers, they will be disqualified (this is a family event). Contestants are judged based on poise, creativity and originality.
