Aug. 3, 2012. Mike Wilson has been named the assistant track and field and cross country coach at Lees-McRae College, announced Bobcat head coach Ley Fletcher Friday.
“We think Mike is a great addition to our track and field program. His experience as a student-athlete at Appalachian State will be crucial to our success,” said Director of Athletics Craig McPhail. “Mike spent time with our program this past year and we saw improvements in a lot of areas, so we look forward to seeing recruit more talented, good character, role-model student-athletes to Lees-McRae.”
Wilson joins the Bobcat coaching staff following a tremendous career as a track athlete at nearby Appalachian State University, where he competed in the pole vault, high jump, triple jump, and long jump for the Mountaineers. He posted several outstanding performances during his career at ASU, including a fourth-place finish at the SoCon Outdoor Championships in the pole vault as a junior.
A native of Asheville, N.C., Wilson assisted the Lees-McRae track and field program as a volunteer last season, working primarily with the Bobcats’ pole vaulters and helping Lees-McRae to post one of the top team performances in school history at the Conference Carolinas Championships. Wilson graduated from Appalachian State in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in exercise science.
“Mike is a terrific field events coach, and we are extremely pleased to have him on our staff,” said Fletcher. “His time as an athlete at Appalachian State, as well as his experience as a volunteer with us last year, should make him a tremendous asset to our program.”
