July 30, 2014. Former Appalachian State University baseball standout Will Callaway has been named the starting third baseman for the South Division team in next Tuesday’s Northwest League All-Star Game.
In 40 games for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (class A short-season affiliate of the San Francisco Giants), Callaway is hitting .293 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 23 RBI. He is tied for seventh in the Northwest League in doubles, tied for 12th in the league in RBI and ranks 14th in the NWL in hitting.
Callaway was a two-time all-Southern Conference shortstop in his three seasons at Appalachian State (2011-13) and was selected by the Giants in the 37th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. He is the second former Mountaineer to earn a professional all-star nod this summer, joining his former double-play mate, Hector Crespo, who played in the Pioneer League All-Star Game earlier this month.
The Northwest League All-Star Game is set for Tuesday, Aug. 5 at PK Park in Eugene, Ore.
In addition to Callaway’s and Crespo’s professional honors, several current Mountaineers have earned all-star recognition in various collegiate summer leagues this year. Check appstatesports.com on Wednesday for a full recap of their accolades.
