After Coming Off Hibriten Defeat Last Friday, WHS Pioneers Face Patton High School In Morganton Tonight

By Mark S. Kenna

Oct. 21, 2013. The Pioneers (6-2) lost to the Hibriten Panters Friday after not completing a two-point conversion in the last thirty seconds of the game, final score 44-45.

“We played pretty hard Friday night,” Ryan Habich, head coach said. “It was one of those game where we came up a few inches short.”

At the end of the first half the Pioneers lead the Panthers 24-19. After the half, though, Hibriten put in 19 points during the third quarter and another seven during the fourth quarter.

Missing blocking assignments and lack of discipline caused the Pioneers to miss the two-point conversion, Habich said.

The Pioneers will travel to Morganton this week to face the Patton High School Panthers.

With attributes similar to Hibriten and Freedom, the Pioneers will have to keep up their intensity on the field; Patton is big, fast and very aggressive on defense, Habich said.

“The rest of the way we’re going to have to play great football to win games,” Habich added

Patton (7-1) is coming off victories over Fred T. Foard, Saint Stevens and the last year’s conference champion South Caldwell.

Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. at Morganton on Tonight.
