July 30, 2012. While most kids have been enjoying summertime in part by sleeping in late every morning, a committed group of young people have been at swim practice at 7:00am, practicing hard during the long course swim season. Many of those days also included dry land training in addition to the 2 hours of swimming every morning.

As a result, Watauga Swim Team members have made their mark at the recent North Carolina State Long Course Swim Championships held recently in Charlotte, NC.

With a strong long course season, the following swimmers qualified for the N.C. State Championship in the following events: Grace Temple qualified in the 50 and 100 meter butterfly; Reed Conner qualified in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle; Madie Darner qualified in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle and 50 meter backstroke; Ella Campbell qualified in the 50, 100, and 200 meter breaststroke; and Caroline Forsyth qualified in the 50, 100, and 200 meter breaststroke, the 50 and 100 meter butterfly, and the 50, 100, and 200 meter freestyle. Caroline and Ella each medaled in all three of their breaststroke events, helping the team earn enough points to place 17th overall in the state.

Caroline Forsyth, Grace Temple, Ella Campbell, and Madie Darner also represented the Watauga Swim Team in the 200 meter freestyle relay and the 400 meter freestyle relay. The relay team was the 11th fastest team in the state.

Coached this summer by Jodi Cash, JD Dove, Nicole Higgins, and Tera Darner, the Watauga Swim Team swimmers had outstanding qualifying times at recent swim meets in Shelby, Greensboro, and Lenoir, NC that placed them among the best swimmers in the state.

The long course state swim championships were held on July 13, 14, and 15 at the Mecklenburg Swim Facility in Charlotte, NC. For more information about the Watauga Swim Team, go to their website at www.wataugaswimteam.org.
