Three Football Teams in Sun Belt To Play Bowl Games

Sun BeltBy Jesse Wood

Dec. 4, 2014. With Georgia Southern (9-3, 8-0 Sun Belt) and Appalachian State (7-5, 6-2 Sun Belt), which finished first and third in the Sun Belt Conference, sitting on the sidelines this postseason because of the transition period from FCS to FBS, it appears that Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette and South Alabama have received bowl bids.

Arkansas State (7-5, 5-3 Sun Belt) accepted an invitation to play in the Jan. 4 GoDaddy Bowl, and sources told ESPN on Wednesday that Louisiana-Lafayette and South Alabama will play in the other two bowls that have contracts with the Sun Belt Conference.

Louisiana-Lafayette (8-4, 7-1 Sun Belt) will pay in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 20 against a Mountain West Conference team, and South Alabama (6-6, 5-3 Sun Belt) will play in the Camellia Bowl against a Mid-American Conference team on Dec. 20.

Considering how well Georgia Southern and Appalachian State performed in their first year in the FBS, both  applied for a waiver to be eligible to play in bowl games. However, both requests, which athletics officials deemed a long shot to begin with, were denied by the an NCAA committee.
