March 11, 2014. Six members of the Watauga Swim Team traveled through ice and snow to compete on North Carolina’s biggest stage for age group swimming this past February in the 2014 NC 14 and Under Short Course Championships held at the state of the art Greensboro Aquatic Center.  For these swimmers this meet is the culmination of seven months of hard training in the pool.  And for all six their hard work paid off with great performances at the state level.

The following swimmers were part of the WST State Team in Greensboro and qualified to swim in the following events:  Henryk Kosmala, 50y and 100y butterfly, 100y backstroke; Ella Campbell, 100y and 200y breaststroke, 50y freestyle, 200y medley relay, 200y freestyle relay; Alayna Arnholt, 200y medley relay, 200y freestyle relay; Caroline Forsyth, 100y and 200y breaststroke, 100y butterfly, 100y backstroke, 100y and 50y freestyle, 200y individual medley, 200y medley relay, 200y freestyle relay, Grace Temple, 100y butterfly,  200y medley relay, 200y freestyle relay, and Isabelle Temple, 100y and 50y breaststroke, 100y and 50y freestyle, 100y and 50y butterfly, 100y and 200y individual medley.

Caroline Forsyth posted a third place finish in the 100y breaststroke and a fourth place in the 200y breaststroke.  Isabelle Temple took tenth place in the 50y breaststroke and eleventh in the 100y breaststroke.  Grace Temple swam to a team record in the 100y butterfly.  The two relays comprised of Ella Campbell, Alayna Arnholt, Caroline Forsyth and Grace Temple also blew existing team records out of the water.  Isabelle Temple bettered a team record that she already held in the 100y breaststroke as well.  All six swimmers posted numerous personal best times.

Head Coach Nate Fields had this to say about the meet. “Our swimmers should be very proud of themselves.  They put in a ton of work to get to this level in the sport and to swim as well as they did just makes the weekend even better!”

Henryk Kosmala, Ella Campbell, Caroline Forsyth, Grace Temple, and Isabelle Temple earned qualifying times fast enough to move on to the Sectional level.  WST will be competing against swimmers from the entire southeastern part of the country in Atlanta, GA at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center starting March 20th.
