The Second Annual Mountaineer Mud Run Scheduled for Saturday, May 17 at High Country Fairgrounds

by Madison V. Fisler

April 9, 2014. The second annual Mountaineer Mud Run is expected to draw an even bigger and even muddier crowd than the first run which was held in September of 2013. The run, which drew hundreds of athletes to the High Country Fairgrounds to compete last year, returns with a vengeance on Saturday, May 17.

Traditional mud run lovers will rejoice at this event, which features races for teams and individuals over muddy terrain and obstacles that will challenge even the most seasoned athlete.

MudRun_750_01For the run, competitors can choose to compete alone or in teams of four to race across more than three miles of mud-caked terrain.

But this event wasn’t all about the run. The Mountaineer Mud Run came complete with its own festival, featuring live music, food and lots of fun for runners and spectators of all ages.

Registration for the Mountaineer Mud Run is now open. Registration for single racers prior to April 30 is $40 and $50 through May 15. Registration for teams of four is $160 prior to April 30 and $200 through May 15.

And like last year, the mud run this year has a charity component as well.

“We are donating part of the profits back to the Kiwanis Club,” said Kenny Johnson who is coordinating the event.

Last year, the event drew about 500 competitors and this year the event is expected to bring in even more.

“We were just tickled last year when we got 500 people to come out, and we are hoping even more come this year,” Johnson said.

Participants are recommended to wear old, comfortable clothes that will help protect you from cuts and bruises (long pants or running tights a great choice). It is also suggested that participants stay away from thick cotton materials that will absorb water and add weight to a difficult run (like cotton socks or sweatpants). Athletes are advised to wear shoes with lots of traction to get you through the mud. Keep in mind that the most creative team costume will receive a prize!
