Sept. 16, 2013. On Sept. 14, the inaugural Mountaineer Mud Run took place at the High Country Fairgrounds. Hundreds of athletes competed as individuals or as teams as they bogged through the course riddled with mud, dirt, obstacles and more.
The run proved to be a demanding physical effort for all participants, individual or in teams, who raced through more than three miles of muddy terrain, featuring climbing obstacles, rivers, mud pits and much more. This challenging course dirtied up even the most seasoned of mud run veterans.
The event raised money for the Kiwanis Club of Boone, according to Kenny Johnson, who coordinates the event.
But this event wasn’t all about the run. The Mountaineer Mud Run came complete with its own festival, featuring live music, food and lots of fun for runners and spectators of all ages. There was even a proposal at the finish line-don’t worry, she said yes!
“We had close to to 500 people out there and we had several families come out to watch runners. We even had some people come from out of state from as far as West Virginia,” Johnson said.
Johnson would like to thank all of the sponsors, volunteers and people who helped to make this event possible.
“We had a great time, and we are looking forward to hopefully doing another one in the spring!”
