The Appalachian Rollergirls Score A much Needed Win Against Upstate Roller Girl Evolution on Saturday

by Madison V. Fisler

Aug. 29, 2013. Last weekend, the High Country’s very own Appalachian Rollergirls made their way to Greenville, S.C. to take on the Upstate Roller Girl Evolution (URGE). After a hard-fought battle, the RollerGirls came out victorious with a score of 168-156. The Rollergirl record for the 2013 season is now 2 wins and 6 losses.

During their last bout, the RollerGirls found themselves constantly in the penalty box. This time, however, the girls remained calm, cool and collected.

“It was a close game and we maintained control over our penalties,” said Sarah Holt aka HOLT 45.

“Our goal was to stay out of the penalty box as much as possible.”

This bout’s MVP was Pretty Young Thang (PYT), a rookie on the roster who has really stepped up to each challenge. PYT scored 110 of the RollerGirl’s 168 points.

“Every game she gets better,” said team captain Jennele Vaquera. “She’s gonna be a superstar next year!”

During this bout, the team really pulled together and worked as a unit to achieve success.

“We were mostly effective because we played as a team,” Vaquera said. “We controlled the tempo of the game and that is huge for us.”

The final bout of the 2013 season for the RollerGirls will come on Sept. 28 when the RollerGirls take on the Charlotte Rollergirl’s Allstars team at Grady Cole Center in Charlotte at 6 p.m.

“It’s gonna be tough,” Vaquera said. “It’s going to be a fun challenge and a learning experience.”
