Aug. 30, 2012. Perfect Game USA has tabbed Appalachian State University sophomore Jeffrey Springs (Belmont, N.C./South Point) as the No. 2 professional baseball prospect to play in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League this summer.

Springs overpowered SCBL hitters this summer, striking out 24 batters and allowing just eight earned runs on 24 hits over 27.1 innings of work for the Pineville Pioneers. The southpaw would have ranked second in the SCBL with a 2.63 ERA but fell less than four innings shy of the 31.2 IP needed to qualify among the league’s official statistical leaders.

The 6-1 left-hander went 2-1 with a 4.80 ERA in 12 appearances (five starts) as a true freshman at Appalachian State last spring while helping the Mountaineers win their first Southern Conference championship in 25 years.

Springs and the Mountaineers have begun individual workouts with new head coach Billy Jones and his staff and will begin full team practices next month in anticipation of defending their SoCon title next spring.
