May 19, 2014. Appalachian State University baseball’s path to a second NCAA Tournament berth in three years has been set with the announcement of the Southern Conference Tournament bracket. The tournament runs Tuesday-Sunday at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C.

Appalachian State (20-32, 12-14 SoCon) is the No. 5 seed in the 10-team tournament field and, after securing an opening-round bye, opens postseason play on Wednesday at 10 a.m. against No. 4-seeded Georgia Southern (34-20, 15-12 SoCon). Georgia Southern took 2-of-3 regular-season meetings between the two clubs on March 21-23 in Statesboro, Ga.

The rest of Appalachian’s double-elimination bracket will include top-seeded Western Carolina and the winner of Tuesday’s single-elimination opening-round game between No. 8 Furman and No. 9 UNCG.

Should the Mountaineers defeat Georgia Southern on Wednesday, it would advance to face the winner of Wednesday’s game between WCU and Furman or UNCG on Thursday at either 5 or 8 p.m. If App State falls to GSU, it would face the loser of the WCU-Furman/UNCG contest in an elimination game on Thursday at 10 a.m.

The other double-elimination bracket will include No. 2 Davidson, No. 3 Samford, No. 6 Wofford and the winner of Tuesday’s second opening-round game between No. 7 Elon and No. 10 The Citadel.

The winners of the two double-elimination brackets will play in a winner-take-all championship game on Sunday at 2 p.m. The tournament champion will receive the SoCon’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which begins on May 31.
