May 3, 2013. Rocky Knob Bike Park has its Grand Opening on Sunday, May 5, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Sponsored by the Watauga County Tourism Development Authority, the Grand Opening, which is held in conjunction with Boone Area Cyclists’ Rocky Knob Fest, includes a ribbon ceremony at 3:30 p.m.

The event includes barbecue and bike demos from Magic Cycles and Boone Bike.

Funding for the park was derived from a 6-percent occupancy tax levied on short term lodging rentals in Watauga County by the TDA. That revenue was then leveraged to receive a $500,000 grant from N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund.

Also smaller grants were secured from Bikes Belong Foundation and Specialized Bicycles, which were made accessible through the TDA’s partnership with Boone Area Cyclists, which also provided thousands of volunteer hours from BAC members – thus saving costs on labor for constructing the park.

The park is located just east of the city limits with frontage on U.S. 421 and is adjacent to the landfill. For more than 20 years, a majority of the land sat dormant. Now it will be a part of the many outdoor recreational areas the High Country already offers.

Before cyclists had to travel down the mountain to ride, and now a top-notch park that features trails for all skill levels is right out the backdoor.

The construction of the park began in the summer of 2010. Built in phases, the park is now complete.
