Registration is Now Officially Open for Girls on the Run of the High Country for the 2014 Spring Session

Jan. 7, 2014. Local girls in grades 3 through 8 are invited to participate in Girls on the Run of the High Country (GOTR).  Registration for the spring session is open now at www.gotr.appstate.edu . The program will begin the week of Feb. 3, 2014.

Girls on the Run inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The 12-week program innovatively weaves training for the ZAP Fitness Girls on the Run 5K (to be held on May 3) with lessons focused on developing essential life skills.

-1The lessons inspire the girls to be strong, contented and self-confident individuals who intentionally choose an authentic and healthy lifestyle. By gaining a greater sense of self-awareness and personal achievement, the girls are empowered to believe in themselves. There are Girls on the Run programs in more than 200 cities in the United States and Canada with over 120,000 participants annually.

Each local group is open to 15 students and will meet twice per week for an hour and 15 minutes.  The groups will meet at the following elementary schools in Watauga County: Hardin Park, Green Valley, Parkway and Cove Creek.

Additionally, Girls on Track for girls in 6th-8th grade will meet at the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System’s Wellness Center on Sundays from 1-4 p.m. Avery County GOTR school sites include Riverside, Banner Elk and Avery County Middle School.

Girls from Wilkes County may participate at North Wilkes Middle School. Girls from any school, in addition to those who are home-schooled, may enroll in any of the sessions at the various sites.
