Red Bull ThingamaJIB Returns to App Ski Mountain on Saturday Evening; Hosts Best Skiers and Boarders Around

By Paul T. Choate

Red-Bull-ThingamajibJan. 30, 2013. The Red Bull ThingamaJIB will return to the Appalachian Ski Mountain Terrain Park for a second year on Saturday, Feb. 2. The Red Bull ThingamaJIB trick skiing and snowboarding contest is not held anywhere else in the country besides App Ski Mountain, so attendees on Saturday are in for a treat.

“What it was founded on was kind of repurposing items that maybe you see in the street that you wouldn’t necessarily find in the terrian park, such as trash cans, maybe old propane tanks and those sorts of things,” said Drew Stanley, App Ski Mountain marketing director. “We’re finding these things that are sort of scrap for cities and we’re repurposing and fabricating them so they can be used in the terrain park.”

Some of the region’s best terrain park skiers and snowboarders are expected to be on hand for the event.

“It’s a good mix of locals and people from off the mountain, and there are tons of locals that get excited about this event,” Stanley said.

Last year, a local named Kris Jones won first place in snowboarding, but second place went to someone from up around the Washington, D.C. area, Stanley said.

This year will mark the first year the event is held at night, and Stanley said he thinks that will make it even more interesting and give the terrain park that “city streets” feel under the lights.

Registration is from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and the competition is free to enter. Stanley said there will be a jam session held starting at 6 p.m. that will last about 90 minutes, after which the best six or so (give or take) in skiing and snowboarding will be selected to compete in the final round.

Red Bull is offering a $400 cash prize for first place in both skiing and snowboarding. Competitors will be judged on style, difficulty of their tricks and proficiency in landing all tricks.

Spectators are highly encouraged to come out to watch the event and free spectator tickets will be issued at registration and through the main office.
