WHS Beats Patton 24-21 on the Road, Faces 5-4 Hickory Friday For Pioneer Pride Night in Final Home Game

Oct. 28, 2013. Pioneers beat Patton on the road with an impressive fourth quarter 80-yard drive Friday Oct. 25 to make the final score 24-21 after a tough game in Morganton.

Patton stuck first with a touchdown on their second play of the game, however the Pioneers responded; it was not enough, though, as they trailed 7-14 at the half.  Yet, the Pioneers came out with a first drive touchdown at the beginning of the third quarter.  And after kicking a field goal in the third quarter the Pioneers made the score 17-14.  Patton then returned the kickoff after the field goal for a touchdown, making the score 17-21. With eight minutes left in the ballgame, the Pioneers mounted an 80-yard drive, which put the score at 24-21, and with three minuets left on the clock, they held off Patton for a road win.

“It was a good win for us,” Ryan Habich, head coach said.

The Pioneers take on Hickory High School Red Tornadoes Friday, a team Habich knows the athleticism of.

“They’re the most athletic team in our conference bar none,” Habich said. “They have 10 guys that we could not catch in the open field, so we have to play team football.”

In comparison to Hibriten and Patton Hickory is not as aggressive, Habich added.

However this does not make Habich and the Pioneers complacent with their 6-2 record over Hickory’s 5-4 record.

“They’re the most explosive squad we play by far,” Habich said. “They got guys who can score from 99-yards out if they touch the ball, so we need to stop the big plays.”

This Friday, Nov. 1, the Pioneers will take on the Red Tornadoes from Jack Groce for Pioneer Pride Night at 7:30 p.m.
