May 27, 2014. High Country Recreation will host another meeting with the purpose of generating interest and gaining feedback on a potential recreation center in Watauga County on Tuesday, May 27. The meeting, which begins at 5:30 p.m., will be held at the media center in the Cove Creek Elementary School.
In April, a similar meeting was held at Green Valley Elementary School.
“We felt like we had a successful meeting at Green Valley in April and want to continue to engage the public with this issue,” High Country Recreation board member Scott St. Claire said in an email announcing the meeting.
Since a site analysis in September 2013 found that a YMCA business model is not viable in Watauga County, St. Claire mentioned that a “county recreation center is our only option to meet this need.”
Prior to last month’s meeting, Commissioner John Welch mentioned that High Country Recreation was striving to reach out to more folks in the community to gauge interest in a community recreation center, something that has been discussed off and on for the past 30 years.
“It sounds like [High Country Recreation] is trying to create a larger community conversation than in the past and trying to include more areas of the county for more people to really join the conversation,” Welch said.
