Feb. 12, 2013. Watauga Swim Team swimmers have been hard at work during their short course season (competition in 25-yard indoor pools from September to March), and nine of those swimmers will be heading to state championships over the next two weekends.
Anne Taylor, a senior (ages 15 and up) swimmer, will compete at the Senior Championships on Feb. 23 in Cary. WST’s other eight state swimmers will head to Cary this weekend for the 14 and Under State Championships. According to WST Head Coach Jodi Cash, this is one of the largest number of state-qualifying swimmers that WST has had in recent memory.
“It’s a testimony to their hard work and dedication, and many, many hours in the pool. I’m so proud to be taking this group of swimmers to state–they are not only strong swimmers, but they’re great kids, too,” Cash said.
The swimmers and their events are as follows:
Anne Taylor (age 16): 50 free (FR)
Ella Campbell (12): 500 FR, 50 FR, 100 FR, 100 IM (individual medley), 200 IM, 50 BR (breaststroke), 100 BR, 50 FLY (butterfly)
Barrett Conner (12): 100 BACK (backstroke)
Reed Conner (14): 100 BR, 200 BR, 50 FR, 100 FR, 200 BACK
Caroline Forsyth (13): 100 BR, 200 BR, 100 FR, 200 IM
Blane St. Clair: (10): 50 FLY
Price St. Clair (12): 50 FLY, 100 FLY, 50 BACK
Grace Temple (12): 50 FLY, 100 FLY, 100 IM, 200 IM, 100 FR
Isabelle Temple (10): 50 BR
Ella Campbell, Caroline Forsyth, Reed Conner, Price St. Clair, and Grace Temple already have qualifying times fast enough for the sectional (regional) championships to be held in Greensboro in March. Competition at sectionals is the highest possible level for 14 and Under swimmers, as national competitions are for swimmers 15 and older. This will be the largest group WST has advanced to the sectional level in recent history.
