Nine Former App State Mountaineers Remain on NFL Rosters Following Mandatory Cuts to 53 Players

Sept. 1, 2013. Nine former Appalachian State University student-athletes remain on National Football League rosters following the teams’ mandatory cuts on Saturday that left the regular-season limit of 53 players in each organization.

Second-year running back Travaris Cadet (New Orleans Saints), fourth-year wide receiver Armanti Edwards (Carolina Panthers), eighth-year defensive end Jason Hunter (Oakland Raiders), third-year offensive lineman Daniel Kilgore (San Francisco 49ers), rookie punter Sam Martin (Detroit Lions), rookie defensive back Demetrius McCray (Jacksonville Jaguars), second-year wide receiver Brian Quick (St. Louis Rams) and third-year linebacker D.J. Smith (San Diego Chargers) have made their respective teams coming out of training camp. Additionally, rookie linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough remains with the Washington Redskins but will spend the 2013 campaign on the injured reserve after undergoing season-ending surgery for a shoulder injury sustained during the team’s preseason opener versus the Tennessee Titans.

Defensive end Jabari Fletcher (Dallas Cowboys), safety Corey Lynch (Tennessee Titans), running back Steven Miller (Detroit Lions) and cornerback DeAndre Presley (Miami Dolphins) were released by their respective teams on Saturday. All four may be claimed on waivers by any team except for the ones that released them. If they are not claimed on waivers, Fletcher, Miller and Presley are eligible to join any team (including the ones that released them) either as a member of a 53-man regular-season roster or a team’s eight-player practice squad.

In all, 15 former Mountaineers were on NFL rosters during training camp. Defensive backs Mark LeGree (Buffalo Bills) and Troy Sanders (Atlanta Falcons) were released earlier in the preseason. Sanders is eligible for practice-squad participation.

Should all eight former Mountaineers play for their respective teams this season, it would tie the Appalachian State record for former players to participate in an NFL regular season. Eight former Mountaineers also played during the strike-shortened 1987 campaign.
