Nov. 5, 2012. Appalachian State University men’s basketball opened its exhibition slate in style with an impressive 76-55 win over Lees-McRae on Friday at the Holmes Center.
Tab Hamilton led all players with 20 points while Jay Canty (15), Nathan Healy (13) and Tevin Baskin (11) all scored in double figures. The Bobcats managed to have just one player score in double-digits as Daniel Sepokas put up a team-high 13 points.
The game began tightly contested as Lees-McRae hung in for much of the first half, but an eventual 12-3 run by the Mountaineers put them in front by 10 points (21-11) at the 7:20 mark and helped App State to a 32-17 halftime lead.
Appalachian would continue to pour it on in the second half as it grabbed its first 20-point lead at 43-23 with 14:06 left to play. The Mountaineers would lead by as many as 27 points (70-43) before taking their foot off the gas.
For the game, App State shot 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the floor and converted 83.9 percent (26-of-31) of its free throws. Baskin led all players with a 9-for-10 mark at the charity stripe.
Lees-McRae shot just 31.3 percent (21-for-67) from the floor including a paltry 24.0 percent (6-for-25) from long range. The Bobcats were able to win the rebound battle by a 45-44 margin, though App State’s Canty was the high rebounder with nine in the contest.
The Mountaineers return to action against Carson-Newman in their final exhibition of the season at 7 p.m. tonight at the Holmes Center.
