Monique Govan Brings Playing, Coaching and Organizational Experience to ASU Women’s Basketball

June 28, 2012. Appalachian State University women’s basketball head coach Darcie Vincent announced the hiring of Monique Govan as the team’s new assistant coach on Wednesday.

“We are extremely excited about having Monique join our team, said Vincent. “She is truly a strong young women with a tremendous work ethic and enthusiasm for our game of women’s basketball.”

“Her experience in the ACC, Big 10 and the Atlantic 10 has more than prepared her for what is ahead. We feel strongly that we have completed our staff with a women of substance and are ready to for upcoming season of challenges.”

Govan, who spent the last two seasons at Georgia Tech, will assist the Mountaineers in all aspects of coaching and recruiting.

“I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to be here at Appalachian State,” said Govan. “Having the chance to work with Darcie will be a great learning experience for me, she is a great coach and she is a winner.” 

Prior to arriving at Appalachian, Govan served as the Coordinator of Recruiting Operations for the Yellow Jackets during the 2011-12 season where she was responsible for coordinating all team travel and recruiting visits while also maintaining the recruiting database for the Ramblin’ Wreck.

She was also responsible for assisting with scouting reports as well as helping develop in-game strategies with the rest of the coaching staff. In addition to those duties, Govan also oversaw all purchasing, inventory and budgeting for the team’s equipment and locker room needs while coordinating all of the Yellow Jackets’ practice times.

During the 2010-11 season she held the title of Director of Basketball Operations where she coordinated team travel, equipment needs and practice times while also serving as the team’s academic liaison which included making arrangements for study tables and tutor schedules as well as compiling academic reports.

Before her time at Georgia Tech, Govan spent three seasons at Michigan State where she served as the Spartans video coordinator from 2007-09 and the team’s Coordinator of Basketball Operations from 2009-10. During her time with the Spartans, Govan was responsible for all film exchange and editing while also overseeing the Spartans’ budget and travel needs.

“I have learned a lot from my previous experiences at Georgia Tech and Michigan State,” said Govan. “I hope that I can use those experiences to help impact Appalachian and help Coach Vincent continue to build on the success she has already had.”

She also has experience as the Director of Basketball Operations at Ball State from 2005-07 where she assisted with the editing and exchange of film as well as plan all team meals and other accommodations.

During her time with the Cardinals, Govan successfully completed her master’s degree in sports administration and completed an internship with the Associate Athletic Director for Facilities and Operations, where she helped develop various contracts for officials and coordinated the scheduling of various athletic facilities.

Govan has been a part of four NCAA Tournament runs, including appearances in the Sweet 16 with both Michigan State and Georgia Tech. She has also been part of two teams that advanced to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament including an appearance in the 2008 WNIT Championship game with Michigan State.

A 2005 graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Govan was a four-year letterwinner for the Minutewomen and was a captain during her senior year. In addition to her on-court accolades, she was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council at UMass and a two-year member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Cup Honor Roll.
