March 4, 2014. Men’s and women’s Appalachian State basketball teams will compete for a bid to the NCAA tournament during the Southern Conference tournament that ends with the championship games on Monday, March 10. The tournament takes place in Asheville.
The men’s Mountaineers have had a disappointing season to say the least, finishing near the bottom of the Southern Conference with a 9-20 record. While only two of the nine wins came away from home, the Mountaineers are 10-3 all-time in the first round of the SoCon Tournament, picking up a 93-81 win over College of Charleston the last time it played in the first round on March 2, 2012.
Ranked as a ninth seed in the Southern Conference tournament, the men’s teams faces No. 8 Samford (12-19) at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 7, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville. And if the Mountaineers beat Samford, it would go on to face No. 1 Davidson (19-11), which has a 12 game winning streak, in the quarterfinals on Saturday, March 8, at noon.
The women’s Mountaineers have fared better than their male counterparts this season and earned a first-round bye. They head into the Southern Conference tournament ranked fourth with a 13-15 record.
Women’s basketball plays its first game in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference tournament on Saturday, March 8, at 2:15 p.m. as it takes on No. 5 Elon at Kimmel Arena in Asheville.
In a release, Appalachian State Athletics noted that “Appalachian won four out of its last five games of the season to clinch the No. 4 seed for the second year in-a-row, a huge accomplishment after graduating four of the team’s five starters. The Mountaineers split the series between Elon this season, getting a 71-60 win over the Phoenix on Feb. 17, helping them to their fourth-place standing.”
