Jan. 8, 2013. Appalachian State University cornerback Demetrius McCray (Covington, Ga./Newton) has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2013 National Football League Players Association Collegiate Bowl, the NFLPA has announced. The second-annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The contest will be televised live on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. ET.
McCray tied for the Southern Conference lead with four interceptions in 2012, becoming the first Mountaineer cornerback to ever lead the league in interceptions twice (he also paced the SoCon with five INTs in 2011). He finished his career with 10 interceptions, good for a tie for 10th among active NCAA Division I FCS players in 2012.
Additionally, the senior led Appalachian State with eight passes defended, ranked sixth on the team with 55 tackles from his cornerback position and forced a fumble. He was a consensus first-team all-conference selection, earned second-team All-America recognition from the Associated Press and was one of 20 finalists for the Buck Buchanan Award, which is presented to the nation’s top FCS defensive player.
The 2013 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl also includes a week of practices leading up to the game, which gives the players the opportunity to receive top-notch coaching from NFL legends Dick Vermeil, the head coach of the National team, and Herm Edwards, the coach of the American team, as well as impress NFL scouts. Both teams’ practices on Thursday, Jan. 17 will be televised live on ESPNU at 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. ET.
McCray has also been invited to participate in the 2013 NFL Combine, which will be held next month in Indianapolis.
