April 1, 2014. Two days after the Charlotte Observer reported that sources indicated that Bobby Lutz, an associate head coach for N.C. State’s basketball team, had emerged has the top candidate for the head coaching position at App State, Lutz took to Twitter to withdraw his name from the list of candidates.
Lutz made the announcement on March 28: “W/drew name from App State. Charlie Cobb 1st class. All the best. So excited to be with Mark Gottfried and NC State. Future is bright.”
Sources also cited that App State had prior interest in Mike Rhoades, a former assistant at Virginia Commonwealth, until Rhoades was recently named as the head coach at Rice University.
After the basketball season ended, Jason Capel’s four-year contract wasn’t renewed after a dismal season.
