June 3, 2014. The town of Beech Mountain has announced five options for runners during this year’s “A Cool 5” race weekend held June 20-22. The annual event has grown from a single race years ago into a multi-race format that runs over an entire weekend. There is competition available for every fitness level and an activity for everyone in the family.

Kids and families are encouraged to participate in two events held on Friday, June 20. Starting at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 20 is the “Buck-A-Thon” fundraiser in which walkers collect dollars for each lap they complete on the Buckeye Recreation Center walking track. At 4 p.m., the Kids’ Cool Popsicle relay will begin on the athletic fields at Buckeye Recreation Center. The race is free for participants and offers competition in many different age groups. Course-side lodging is available along with many activities offered before and after the race.

A Taste of Beech begins at Buckeye Recreation Center from 5-7 p.m. Ten of the town’s finest local restaurants and the Beech Mountain Brewery will showcase samples of their fare. There will also be discounts offered to guests and coupons available. This event is offered to runners for free and just $5 for community members. Proceeds from the event will be used to enhance the recreational opportunities at Buckeye Recreation Center.

On Saturday, June 21, the bulk of the racing will begin. Beginning at Town Hall at 8:30 a.m., a 5-mile run; 1.5-mile fun run and a pet friendly 1.5 mile walk and wag will take place for participants of all ages. Registration for the 5-mile run is $35 in advance and $40 on race day. The fee for the 1.5-mile Fun Run and Walk and Wag is $30 in advance and $40 on race day. Youth registration is available for participants under age 12 for $10 in advance and $15 on race day.

On Sunday, June 22, Beech Mountain will be open for hiking, canoeing, fishing, games and much more to cap off a weekend full of fun.

“We’re returning to the original course for the challenging 5-mile run, which is known for its views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, ascent to the mountaintop and fast downhill finish,” said Rory Ellington of the event committee in a press release.

“The fun run/walk has moderate elevation changes with many locations for spectators to cheer and encourage all racers. Meanwhile, the walk & wag features runners of the four-legged variety on a route that circles the town’s Bark Park and includes stations with doggy water and treats followed by a canine cool down at the Bark Park.”
