May 30, 2012. The High Country Triple Crown, a series of three challenging races through mountain terrain, will be held in the coming months. All proceeds will go to the Girls on the Run of the High Country.
The organization is a self-esteem building program for girls in the 3rd-5th grade. Girls on the Run International was started in Charlotte in 1996, with the aim of providing life-changing experiences to adolescent girls. Around 200,000 people participate in their youth enrichment programs annually and they operate in 173 cities across North America.
The events are co-coordinated with help from Girls on the Run International and the Blue Cross and at Appalachian State.
The path of each race take runners through local communities and gives them the opportunity to take in views of the mountains. Each race varies in distance and difficulty.
The first race, The Valle Crucis Cub 7-Miler, will be held June 16 at the Valle Crucis School. The race begins at 8 a.m. and is sponsored by Mast General Store. Registration is $25 until June 2, and $35 after. Participants can register at www.triplecrown.appstate.edu.
