Season tickets for the High Country Grizzlies, which include a membership in the organization’s Den Club, are now on sale and tryouts for the professional football team take place Saturday, Oct. 15.

While the Arena Development League hasn’t released the 2017 schedule, the Grizzlies will play its first home game in the Holmes Convocation Center in the latter part of March.

The Grizzlies will begin the season on the road around the middle of March, according to High Country Grizzlies General Manager William Thompson, who spoke with High Country Press on Thursday morning.

For local pigskin enthusiasts missing the action of the Charlotte Panthers and App State Mountaineers, Thompson said the Grizzlies will scratch that “dag gone itch for football” during a traditionally slow time of year for the High Country.

“I am so excited for this opportunity and support the community has given us,” Thompson said. “It’s unbelievable. We are so pumped and [ready] to bring a product that makes everybody happy.”

This week, the High Country Grizzlies announced the signing of Arena Football League veterans, college football stars from across the country and players who’ve recently participated in rookie camps in the National Football League. New signees include Jairus Spain, Justin Kenyon, Stephen Panasuk, Daron Clark, Ethan Farmer and Keith Holliday.

Thompson said management is taking a different approach than what is custom in arena-style professional football. For these kids, the dream is to play at the highest level, the NFL. Some arena teams are reluctant to sign the most talented athletes just because they might not stick around for a whole season.

“We take a different approach,” Thompson said, adding that he’s going after players who were just released from NFL teams like the Charlotte Panthers and others who are pretty much on-call with NFL and CFL organizations. “We are looking to push guys to the next level and open doors for more kids … We go get the best players we can get versus the going after the best player for this level.”

Currently, season tickets feature a price discount and all season ticket holders automatically become members of the Den Club and receive a membership card that gives you access to discounts at establishments across the High Country.

General admission season tickets cost $54; the promotion ends Nov. 1 at which time the price is upped to $72. Reserved seating season tickets cost $81; the promotion ends Nov. 1, at which time the prices becomes $108.

Season tickets include six home games between March 25 and May 28.
