March 6, 2013. Appalachian State University men’s basketball senior Nathan Healy was named as the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year as selected by the league’s coaches, it was announced on Tuesday.

In addition to his Defensive Player of the Year accolades, Healy also earned a spot on the coaches’ all-SoCon team and was named as a second team all-conference selection by the league’s media members.

Healy finished the regular season ranked second in the league in rebounding (7.9 rpg) and first in defensive rebounds (6.0 rpg). He currently ranks second in the league in steals (2.0 spg) and third in blocks (1.4 bpg) while anchoring a front line that ranked second in the league with 3.8 blocked shots per contest.

A standout player on both ends of the floor, Healy led the Mountaineers and ranked ninth in the SoCon in scoring (14.6 ppg) and tallied seven double-doubles during the regular season.

He becomes the first Mountaineer to win SoCon Defensive Player of the Year honors in the five years that the award has been granted and is the 50th player in school history to earn all-SoCon accolades.

Earlier this season, Healy became the first men’s basketball player in Appalachian State history to be named as an Academic All-American when he earned a second team Academic All-America nod from CoSIDA.
