Feb. 21, 2013. Appalachian State University men’s basketball senior Nathan Healy has been named as a second-team Capital One Academic All-America selection, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday.

Healy, who currently leads the Mountaineers in both scoring (14.6 ppg) and rebounding (7.6), carries a 3.99 cumulative grade-point average as a management major.

A two-time Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week and academic all-SoCon honoree, the New Bern, N.C. native ranks seventh in the SoCon in scoring, second in rebounding and third in steals (1.9 spg) and blocks (1.4 bpg).

A former walk-on, Healy has posted six double-doubles this season and has scored 20 or more points on seven different occasions. In a Feb. 2 win over Western Carolina, he scored 24 points, grabbed eight rebounds and recorded seven steals, a feat that no other player in NCAA Division I basketball has accomplished this season.

Healy is one of just 15 NCAA Division I men’s basketball student-athletes to earn Academic All-America honors on the first, second or third teams. His impressive GPA ranks him first among those student-athletes selected from public institutions and second overall behind Brown University’s Matthew Sullivan (4.0).
