High Country Grizzlies to Take on Georgia Firebirds in Rematch at Home this Sunday, May 7

By Bailey Faulkner

The High Country Grizzlies (2-3) will return to the Den at the Holmes Convocation Center this Sunday, May 7 to take on the Georgia Firebirds (2-4) in a reprise of the Grizzlies’ season and franchise opener. The Grizzlies and Firebirds squared off on March 18 in Albany when the Grizzlies asserted themselves with a 62-29 victory over the second-year Georgia team.

The Grizzlies will take the field on Sunday after a hard-fought 44-57 loss to the Columbus Lions in Georgia on April 22. With a bye last week, the High Country team has had its eyes set on improving since their last outing.

“Despite the outcome, we still played good football and I was proud of my team for never giving up. We’ll take this bye week to rest up, look at film and iron out some things and get ready for Georgia,” Grizzlies wide receiver and former ASU standout Malachi Jones said after the April 22 loss.

Although they came up short by the end of the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies were able to complete five passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown in their matchup against the Lions. Along with an interception from both Mackenzie Williams and Ethan Farmer, receiver Daniel Lee charted 118 yards and three touchdowns from seven receptions, with Jones adding 56 yards and two touchdowns with his five catches.

The Grizzlies will take the lessons they learned from their loss into this Sunday’s matchup against the Georgia Firebirds. You can watch the Grizzlies’ season opener against the Firebirds below.
