Great Snow Day: After Cold Week of Snow Making, 95 Percent of Slopes/Terrain Parks in the High Country Open

By Jesse Wood

Jan. 28, 2013. With Avery and Watauga County Schools out of session due to the weather, today is a perfect day to take advantage of the clear skies and go skiing and snowboarding.

After a cold week of snow making, just about all of the slopes on the three ski resorts in the High Country are open, and area resorts aren’t making snow to ensure a better experience on the slopes.

Appalachian Ski Mountain has all nine of its slopes/trails and three of its terrain parks open with a base of 44 to 77 inches.

Sugar Mountain has 17 of its 20 slopes/trails open with a base of 18 to 52 inches of snow.

Beech Mountain has 13 of its 15 slopes/trails open with a base of 34 to 70 inches of snow.

Beech’s website states: “It’s a great day for skiing … The conditions are better than ever!”
