March 29, 2013. “This is one of the best closes ever, if not the best,” said Kim Jochl of Sugar Mountain Resort on Friday.

Since the resort’s Halloween opening and through Easter Sunday, Sugar Mountain Resort will have stayed open for 144 days – one of the longest-consecutive-day seasons in the history of the resort.

Bill Leonard of Ski Country Sports agreed with Jochl that this is the best closing he can remember, adding that the season got off to a great start in late October and will finish off very strong on Easter Sunday.

“We’ve had a pretty good week, considering we’re usually closed by now. We were fortunate the snow came when lots of schools in Florida and North Carolina were on spring break. Instead of going to the beach, they came up and enjoyed the last-minute 15 inches of snow,” Leonard said. “It got slow in November and early December, but boy did it come on strong in February and March.”

On Tuesday, Jochl said the conditions were fantastic, and little has changed in those few days.

“We got close to 12 inches of new natural snow with a 26 to 71 inch base,” said Jochl on Tuesday during the three-day snow squall. “100 percent of the slopes are open. It’s really fantastic, and its still coming down, and we got a couple powder areas, too.”

Enjoy the last-minute of March Madness for the next few days, when the lift tickets, lessons and rentals are 25-percent off.

On closing day by mid-afternoon on Easter Sunday, the sounds of live Bluegrass will be heard from the deck, and the outdoor grill will be cooking hot dogs and hamburgers while the annual ceremonial snow burning officially concludes Sugar’s 2012-2013 winter season.
