Final Shred for the Cup Event of 16-17 Season Happens Sunday at Appalachian Ski Mtn.

By Jesse Wood

The final event of the 11th annual Shred for the Cup Series at the App Terrain Park on Appalachian Ski Mtn. takes place on Sunday, Feb. 26, beginning at noon. Registration occurs from 9 to 11 a.m.

Over the past decade, Shred for the Cup has evolved into the benchmark park competition series in the High Country, according to Drew Stanley, director of the ASM’s App Terrain Park and resort spokesman.

“It’s been around for a good while and has become the standard freestyle terrain and competition series in the region,” Stanley said. “This year we’ve had pretty good participation, averaging 50 competitors.”

The Shred for the Cup series consists of three winter events (Rail Jam, Big Air and Slopestyle) that tests skiers and snowboarders’ skills of several park disciplines. Stanley noted that ASM prides itself on creating courses for and appealing to skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. In addition to beginner, intermediate and advanced skill categories, the series offers a dedicated women’s category in both ski and snowboard.

While it’s 60 degrees in Boone on Thursday, the temperature is expected to drop as winter returns for a “36-hour visit” on Saturday night and Sunday, according to RaysWeather.com.

This means the snowmaking crew at the Blowing Rock resort will be able to make some fresh snow for the final SFTC event of the 2016-17 season. Over the next couple nights, the App Terrain Park crew will be setting up the features for the competition by revitalizing Appal Jam and Candied Appal.

“It should be a sunny, cool, beautiful day, so we are expecting a big turnout,” Stanley said.

Alpine Ski Shop, along with Volcom & Electric will be at the event with prizes for top competitors. Since this is the final event, the overall Series Cups will also be awarded after the competition. Stanley also mentioned that the series partners with local restaurants to provide food for the competitors. In the past Mellow Mushroom has been a sponsor, and on Sunday, Appalachian Mountain Brewery’s Farm to Flame will offer a taco bar.
