Diamond Apps Take Game One vs. Oklahoma

June 2, 2012. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Appalachian State University baseball picked up a 5-4 win over third-seeded Oklahoma in its opening game at the Charlottesville Regional of the 2012 NCAA Baseball Championship on Saturday at Davenport Field.

The Mountaineers (40-16) got a dominant pitching performance from senior right-hander Ryan Arrowood (11-0) who allowed just one run on two hits in 7.2 innings of work. He struck out nine batters in the contest and did not allow a hit until a one-out single in the seventh inning.

Appalachian jumped on the No. 23 Sooners (38-23) early in the contest, plating two runs in the third inning off Sooner starter Jordan John (8-7) who allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits in eight innings.

ASU would also score one run in the eighth and two in the ninth before shutting the door for its first NCAA Tournament win in 39 years.

Trey Holmes led the Apps with three hits, two runs and an RBI while Noah Holmes went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two runs batted in.

Appalachian State will face top-seeded Virginia tomorrow at 3 p.m. and the winner will advance to Monday’s regional championship game.
