Lee Named Head Baseball Coach at WHS

David Lee, an experienced baseball coach whose teams at other NC high schools have enjoyed great success, has been named head baseball coach at Watauga High School. His appointment was made official by the Watauga County Board of Education at a special meeting held Monday afternoon to approve a number of new hires for the Watauga County Schools.

WHSLee comes to Watauga High School from Richmond Senior High School in Rockingham, NC.

“We are very pleased to announce the hiring of David Lee as our new baseball at the high school,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Stephen Martin, whose duties for the school system include management of personnel services. “He brings to the high school a wealth of experience, an excellent track record of success, and a great commitment to developing successful student athletes of strong character.   We are confident he will be a great leader for our students at Watauga High School.”

In his 14 years as a varsity baseball coach, Lee’s teams have won 263 out of 396 games, a .664 winning percentage.   His record includes 8 consecutive regular season conference titles at two different schools (West Stanly High School and Richmond Senior High) during 2004 through 2011.   During this period, his teams won at least 20 games each year, topped off by a 25 win season at West Stanly in 2011. He has been Coach of the Year three times in the Rocky River Conference and was the Region 6 Coach of the Year in 2006. In the classroom, Lee has taught high school social studies and physical education. In addition to his extensive experience in baseball, he has coached junior varsity football and overseen athletic field maintenance and preparation.

Lee is a graduate of Pfeiffer University, where he was the number one starter in the pitching rotation for three years and team captain during his senior year. He is a veteran of the Army National Guard and served in Iraq in 2003-04.

Lee succeeds Coach Pete Hardee, who left Watauga High School after 18 years to accept a similar position with Alexander Central High School in Alexander County.
